The roadworks in Blackpool are part of a larger project to create better, more attractive places, leading to investment and jobs for local people.
The tramway is being extended to the railway station, the town centre will be getting a new conference centre, a new IMAX cinema is also being built. There will be more places to shop and eat, new four and five star hotels and the look and feel of streets will be improved.
Update on town centre improvement works
Improvement work around the town centre continues to make good progress with the different projects to make Blackpool better on schedule.
The vision of transformation for Blackpool is becoming a reality with more exciting news that construction of the tramway extension along Talbot Road will begin next month.
The tramway build, road improvements and infrastructure investment will provide benefits to the community and visitors to the town for years to come – including better public transport, modern streets, more places to shop and eat, a new IMAX cinema, new four and five star hotels and a conference centre.
Construction of the new tramway along Talbot Road begins in April. The work is being phased which means small areas of Talbot Road and its junctions will be closed at one time.
Cookson and Caunce Street upgrades
Utility works are now complete. Next we’ll be carrying out improvements which involve resurfacing the road and repaving the footpath.
When is the work happening?
All of the work is being carried out in phases to minimise disruption and the majority of closures around the town centre have now re-opened.
During the next stage of works, there will be some temporary closures:
|Map area||Road closed||Timescales|
|1||Corporation Street closed between Talbot Road and Clifton Street||3 April – 2 July|
|2||Access to Clifton Street re-opens||From 9 May|
|3||Cookson Street closed between Church Street and George Street||9 May – 1 June|

Cllr Fred Jackson, Blackpool Council, Cabinet Member responsible for Highways, said: “We continue to make excellent progress during each phase of the improvement works.
“We all want a more attractive place to live and work and these projects will help us achieve it.
“They are already playing a vital role in attracting investment and job creation. Companies have committed to developments such as hotels and entertainment venues. This is a real boost for our town and shows the confidence that businesses have in Blackpool’s future.”
Business as Usual
Businesses in the town centre will be open as usual during the closures.
Please continue to shop in Blackpool town centre during these works.

Timeline of Making Blackpool Better –
Tramway Extension Works – from 6 Nov
The tramway will be extended at Talbot Road from North Pier to Blackpool North Station. This will enable better public transport links across the town and getting people where they need to be to shop, work and enjoy Blackpool.
The first stage of the project involves moving utility pipes underneath sections of Talbot Road in preparation for laying the new tram tracks. This will take place between November 2017 and March 2018.
Work will also take place on Dickson Road to resurface the road and repave the footway.
There will be some road closures along Talbot Road and Dickson Road but these will be carried out in phases to minimise disruption.
