Great Eggcase Hunt

Great Eggcase Hunt

The Great Eggcase Hunt is a Shark Trust recording project that aims to discover where different species of shark, skate and ray (elasmobranchs) lay their eggs by asking people to scour their local beaches and report any findings.

This project was established in 2003 and has been engaging people in hunting for eggcases (otherwise known as mermaid’s purses) along the coastline ever since.

What does the Great Eggcase Hunt involve?

This project aims to get as many people as possible hunting for shark eggcases, either those that have washed ashore on beaches, or those underwater which can be found by divers.

Reported findings allow the Shark Trust to identify potential nursery grounds, which in turn, provides valuable data that aids conservation and helps with the management of UK shark, skate and ray populations.

The Great Eggcase Hunt continues to represent one of the UK’s most popular marine volunteer recording programmes with over 33,000 eggcases recorded to date, and you can help us!

The Shark Trust are teaming up with The Co-operative Membership to spend a couple of fun hours on a local beach looking for eggcases. This will be an event suitable for all the family.

Why not come along and learn more about what is in the sea?

Come and join the team from Co-operative Membership, The Shark Trust and Blackpool Sealife Centre at St Annes beach, Lytham St Annes at this FREE family event on Sunday 7 April at 11am.

A coach will be provided to take you from Blackpool Sealife Centre to St. Annes beach where experts from the Shark Trust and the Sealife Centre will be on hand to explain how to find and record eggcases and their significance to marine life. After the eggcase hunt we will be heading back to the Sealife Centre where you’ll be able to learn more about the Centre’s conservation work and the Co-operative’s commitment to sustainable seafood. You will then have the opportunity to look round the Sealife Centre. Sandwiches will be provided.
