More about Reads Avenue
It’s amazing what you discover when you start looking into the origins of old Blackpool landmarks. Buildings, roads and local features all have a tale to tell, beyond what you see right now.
Reads Avenue is no exception. It’s another one of those streets that date back to the beginning of Blackpool. You can tell that because the long, straight road is part of the neat grid of streets that form the towns backbone.
It’s named after the Reads family who were prolific housebuilders in the area, and like many others, early entrepreneurs in the town. On 4 September 1861, they opened Read’s Bazaar – a market and sea water baths at South Shore. With the baths filled with seawater, for three weeks in 1878 it even displayed a live whale for public viewing.
Do you remember Dutch Maid ice cream? It was founded in Blackpool in 1926 in Back Reads Avenue.
Choose from a wide variety of accommodation at Reads Avenue. Some of Blackpool’s oldest are here. There are also small, independent hotels, guest houses, bed and breakfast and apartments. You’ll get a home-from-home welcome.
